Lieutenant Colonel Josh Helms is a data analyst in the Army serving as a Research Fellow in the Army's Training With Industry program, through which he works with IBM for one year before returning to the Army. His research fellowship is intended to help him learn how industry analyzes big data and communicates strategic insights to senior leaders to take this knowledge base back to the Army.
After graduating from the United States Military Academy at West Point with a Bachelor of Science in Operations Research, he was commissioned as an Air Defense Artillery Officer and later converted to an Operations Research Systems Analyst (ORSA). He served in various leadership positions to include Avenger/Stinger missile platoon leader, Patriot missile battery commander, and branch chief on the Army staff. He deployed his Patriot battery to Saudi Arabia for Operation Iraqi Freedom.
He began his transition to become an ORSA by completing his graduate studies, earning a Master of Science in Systems Engineering from Southern Methodist University and a Master of Science in Operations Research from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He taught in the Math Department at the United States Military Academy, performed capability and force structure analysis at the Center for Army Analysis, and managed strength analysis and forecasting in the G-1 (Personnel). He also deployed and conducted campaign level analysis in Afghanistan.
