Major Tom McMurtrie is an operations research/systems analyst in the U.S. Army currently serving as a Research Fellow in the Army’s Training with Industry (TWI) Program. In the TWI program, Major McMurtrie works with IBM—including time with IBM’s Center for the Business of Government—for one year before returning to the Army. His research fellowship is intended to develop his technical expertise and analytic leadership so that he can apply industry best practices in his future Army assignments.

In 2008, Major McMurtrie began his transition to become an Operations Research/Systems Analyst (ORSA) by completing his graduate studies and earning a Master of Science in Systems Engineering from the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, CA. He has served in analytic assignments at the Army’s Human Resources Command, the Army Test and Evaluation Command, and the Training and Doctrine Command’s Analysis Center. Major McMurtrie also deployed and conducted campaign and budgetary analysis with the NATO Training Mission in Afghanistan.

After graduating in 2001 from the United States Military Academy at West Point, Major McMurtrie was commissioned as an Armor Officer. He served in various leadership positions as an Armor Officer to include: Tank and Support Platoon Leader, Company Executive Officer, and Company Commander. As an Armor Officer, Major McMurtrie deployed in support of operations in Kosovo and Iraq.
